Pioneer 0 Mission: NASA's First Attempt to Reach the Moon
The Pioneer 0 mission, launched by NASA on August 17, 1958, was an attempt to send a spacecraft to the Moon. Unfortunately, the mission ended in failure just 73.6 seconds after launch due to an explosion. Despite the setback, the mission provided valuable data that contributed to the success of later missions, including the landmark Pioneer 10, which became the first spacecraft to leave our solar system.
